ARAB WOMEN FILM FESTIVAL
2-4 March 2018
The first edition of Arab Women Film Festival that MAFF organized was in March of 2013 as a way of marking the International Women’s day. Working towards equality and lifting voices of those who sometimes are not heard is an important part of MAFFs vision. The Arab Women Film Festival was created as a platform for the Arab women to have an opportunity to show and share their diversity, as well as lifting women in an industry that is highly male dominated. Focus was on choosing female dominated project, off and on screen. The event was straight away highly appreciated and has since evolved into a two-day festival of its own. This year the festival was held in two cities, namely Helsingborg and Malmö.
The invited guests were the director Andac Haznedaroglu, actress Saba Mubarak, director Widad Shafakoj, director/producer/scriptwriter Mariakenzi Lahlou and the director/producer/scriptwriter May Odeh. All of them were a part of either seminars or Q&As connected to their films. This was an amazing way for the audience to get more insight into the filmmaking process, as well as actually meet the people behind the pieces that were shown. In between the showings we also had fika (snacks and coffee), art exhibitions and mingle.
This year 1422 people took part in the Arab Women Film Festival! The turnout in Helsingborg was very good, the visitors enjoyed the mingel and the viewings and the festival was held at Röda Kvarn. In Malmö the festival that was held at Panora.
